Prof. dr. Marc D. de Smet, MDCM, PhD, FRCSC, FRCOphth, DABO, FMH

Specialist in the medical and surgical eye care, with particular emphasis on retinal diseases and ocular inflammation. Professor de Smet has more than 20 years of experience in the field.

Prof. de Smet trained in Canada obtaining first a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (cum Laude) from the University of Ottawa. He completed medical school at Mc Gill University in Montreal, followed by internship at the Royal Victoria Hospital, and a residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Bristish Columbia in Vancouver, Bristish Columbia. He then worked in the Laboratory of Immunology of the National Eye Institute (NIH) in Bethesda MD, where he headed the clinical immunology division. During his stay in the United States, he also completed a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins medical school in Baltimore, MD.

He left his position to become the chairman of the department of Ophthalmology at the University of Amsterdam, where he also obtained a PhD in Immunology. During his chairmanship, he developed a first rate unit in medical and surgical retina. He directed a number of experimental programs and clinical trials in ocular inflammation, imaging and microsurgery of the reitna. He authored or co-authored 20 book chapters, over 150 articles in peer reviewed journals. He is a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry, member of the editorial board of ophthalmic journals, participated and headed data safety and review commissions for new therapies in Ophthalmology. He also discovered new treatments such as the use of Methotrexate for the treatment of ocular lymphoma or ocriplasmin in vitreo-macular traction.

He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeon of Canada, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of the UK, diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, and, in Switzerland, he holds the title of FMH Specialist in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic surgery.

She is in charge of coordination of both clinical and surgical activities, as well as serving as prof de Smet personal assistant.

Nicole Girardet

Medical secretary and Professor de Smet assistant, Nicole is in charge of all the administrative and billing activities of the medical office.

Matthieu Goncerut and Hermineh Delessert

Optometrists

Matthieu got his optometrist degree in 2011 but had already acquired extensive exerience in several optical stores in Geneva, the Jura and Neuchatel. In 2016, he joins the Jules Gonnin Ophthalmic Hospital in Lausanne and from September 2017 he works in our medical office as an optometrist. Matthieu is in charge of the imagery in the clinic.

Graduate in optometry in 2014, Hermineh has also broad experience in her field. She has performed eye examinations and lens adaptations in adults and children. Multilingual, she also has experience in sales and management. She joined our team in March 2019. Among hers responsibilities as part of the group, Hermineh performs refractions, imaging of the fundus and offers help and advice to patients when choosing frames and lenses.

Fellows

Ophthalmologists that have completed their basic or more advanced training in ophthalmology may join us for 1 to 2 years of additional training.
